Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) will meet next week decide a course of action regarding allegations of irregularities surrounding the 1999 Strategic Defence Package that saw South Africa acquire 50 fighter aircraft, 30 helicopters, four frigates and three submarines.
SCOPA decided late last year to place the matter back on it agenda. Democratic Alliance MP Eddie Trent says the committee will meet Tuesday and Wednesday “to discuss the way forward.”
He adds several submissions seeking to substantiate allegations have been received.
The R47 billion SDP has been dogged by controversy for years and at least three books have been written on the subject.
