North Korea has proposed high level military talks with rival South Korea in a bid to defuse tensions on the divided peninsula, South Korean media reported.

Pyongyang, which has appealed for talks almost daily since the start of the year, requested inter-Korean talks between the defence ministers, local media reported, reports Reuters.

The South was free to decide the subject, and the time and place for the talks, YTN television reported.
