Milkor has delivered the last batch of 180 Y4 six-shot grenade launchers to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

The weapons were shipped out on 28 February and delivered to SANDF weapon stores. This comes after Milkor won an Armscor tender issued in November 2017 for 370 medium velocity 40 mm grenade launchers and thousands of rounds of ammunition for the South African Army.

Milkor’s SuperSix grenade launchers are designated the Y4 in SA Army service. The weapons are compatible with both 40×46 mm low velocity and longer range 40×51 mm medium velocity rounds – medium velocity rounds have a range of up to 800 metres in area fire mode. Stationary point targets can be hit at around 375 metres.

In addition to the weapons, Milkor is also supplying Trijicon optical sighting systems and Newcon Optik laser rangefinders – Armscor specified the delivery of 370 optical sights and 15 laser rangefinders.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) was awarded the contract to supply the ammunition, which Armscor specified as being 1 458 rounds of 40 mm medium velocity practice ammunition; 1 458 rounds of 40 mm practice medium velocity ammunition; 1 458 rounds of 40 mm high explosive medium velocity ammunition; 1 458 rounds of 40 mm high explosive dual purpose medium velocity ammunition; 1 458 rounds of 40 mm medium velocity smoke rounds; and 1 458 rounds of 40 mm orange marker medium velocity ammunition.

Milkor has sold 64 000 grenade launcher systems to 67 countries around the world, with production of several hundred grenade launchers a month. Most demand comes from Latin America, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia.

The Milkor range includes the flagship SuperSix (which can fire less lethal, low and medium velocity ammunition), the Less Lethal 37/38/40 mm multi-shot launcher, Under Barrel Grenade Launcher, and 37/38 and 40 mm Stopper Convertible single shot launchers. The 40 mm Multiple Grenade Launcher comes in Mk-1L (with a longer chamber for different ammunition types) and the more compact Mk-1S firing 40×105 mm low velocity ammunition.

Milkor is also producing unmanned aerial vehicles, an armoured vehicle and a high-speed interceptor vessel in addition to grenade launchers, and aims to further enhance its offerings, which include cyber security solutions.
