Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering (KPE) has started production of the Barys 6×6 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) for the Kazakh military, which will receive its first vehicles by the end of the year.
The company, a joint venture between Paramount Group and Kazpetromash, said the Barys 6×6 (Mbombe 6) is being manufactured entirely from within Kazakhstan.
The Armed Forces Special Units of the Republic of Kazakhstan have placed an initial order for three vehicles, which is expected to pave the way for a larger order of vehicles to be manufactured by KPE, Janes reported.
The Barys 6×6 is a winterised variant of Paramount Group’s Mbombe 6×6 IFV and is operated by two crew members. The vehicle can carry up to eight troops, with the Barys 6 being additionally equipped with fire extinguishing systems, modified hatches, an upgraded mechanical turret, and various systems for attaching and storing weapons and ammunition internally and externally.
The Armed Forces Special Units of the Republic of Kazakhstan recently carried out a series of trials of the Barys 6×6 in diverse and rugged conditions, during the extreme winter and summer conditions of Kazakhstan.
John Craig, Executive Chairman of Paramount Land Systems, stated that, “This order for the Barys 6×6 by the government of Kazakhstan is a very important achievement for Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering and the country’s defence industrial capabilities. This is laying the foundation for ramped up production of the Barys range of vehicles for years to come. The indigenous production of the state-of-the-art Barys 6×6 emblemizes the country’s advanced industrial and engineering capabilities. It is a proud moment for the country and every employee of KPE.”
The larger Barys’ 8×8 variant recently successfully concluded a four-year series of trials conducted by the Ministry of Defence of Kazakhstan, covering a total distance of 25 000 km, bringing the vehicle closer to its first production order. In addition to testing the vehicle’s mobility, more than 5 000 rounds of 30 mm and 7 000 rounds of 7.62 calibre ammunition were fired during the course of trials.
The Barys 8×8 (‘Snow Leopard’ in Kazakh) is the localised version of Paramount Group’s Mbombe 8 infantry combat vehicle and was unveiled for the first time at the KADEX Exhibition of 2016. The Barys 8×8 had previously undergone testing in adverse weather conditions across Central Asia, withstanding temperatures between +45º and -60ºC during summer and winter trials.
The Barys 8×8 is manufactured in Kazakhstan, at the 15 000 square metre KPE armoured vehicle production facility in Nursultan. Operated by over 200 Kazakhstani employees, the facility has for years manufactured vehicles for Kazakhstan’s Special Operations Forces and its Ministry of Defence, including Arlan (Marauder) vehicles.
