COVID-19 positive case at Armscor under lockdown level one

The most recent COVID-19 positive case at Armscor was reported earlier this month (October) while the lockdown as per the national state of disaster is at level one.

The case, at Armscor headquarters in Pretoria, brings to 26 the total number of COVID-19 cases at the State-owned defence and security acquisition agency since the lockdown started over six months ago at level five.

Where a positive case is reported, Armscor takes action as per its COVID-19 management plan, approved by the Department of Employment and Labour at the outset of government efforts to control the pandemic.

This sees all Armscor employees screened when returning to office after lockdown eased. Employees are also temperature tested twice a day – when entering and leaving the building, which also houses the Department of Defence (DoD) headquarters, Ministry of Defence and the Defence Secretariat.

“Where a positive case is reported, access to the affected work area is restricted to allow for a decontamination process to take place. Armscor also makes an effort to trace close contacts of affected employees,” said Ndodomzi Mvambo, Group Executive: Corporate Support.

Of the 26 reported Armscor COVID-19 positive cases, 23 have recovered with only three active.

The building’s co-occupants have not released any COVID-19 infection or recovery figures with Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula the only known person in the senior defence establishment to have tested positive. She self-isolated and apart from last month’s flight to and from Harare with an ANC delegation as passengers has been fulfilling normal duties remotely.

The SA National Defence Force (SANDF), despite at one stage having over eighty thousand personnel “employed” in its COVID-19 tasking, Operation Notlela, has not released any fatality or positive statistics for personnel on active duty. This included manning roadblocks, doing patrols in built-up areas and supporting police in anti-crime operations as well as other tasks such as water supply.
