Armscor plans to put its name up in lights in the not too distant future, if a tender for the installation of digital billboards is any indication.
It appears the state-owned defence and security acquisition agency isn’t exactly sure what message the billboards will carry.
Response to a defenceWeb inquiry on the tender (EMAS/2019/04) for “digital billboards at Armscor premises” has it there will initially be two billboards at Armscor head office in Nossob Street, Erasmuskloof, Pretoria.
Advocate Ndodomzi Mvambo, Acting Group Executive: Corporate Support, said the location of the billboards would be determined by the appointed service provider who would also be responsible for the type of advertisements on the billboards based “on effective reach and cost”. This in response to defenceWeb wanting to know if the advertising would be corporate, social responsibility oriented or service specific.
More could be on the way with other Armscor facilities including Alkantpan, Gerotek and Protechnik as possible future billboard sites.
Asset sweating, particularly of Armscor properties, was identified as a way on increasing revenue for the acquisition agency during the tenure of previous chief executive, Kevin Wakeford. Suggestions put forward included building a boutique hotel and conference centre close to the Erasmuskloof head office as well as lodges at Alkantpan and Gerotek. There was also mention of a new building at Gerotek, west of Pretoria, to house Defence Intelligence.
According to Mvambo: “Armscor has made progress on the asset sweating programme”.
“Bids have been received for the two Erasmuskloof land parcels (the sportsground and land north of the high school). Armscor is considering the offers and will conclude evaluation by the end of September at the latest.
“Bids have been re-issued for the Alkantpan and Gerotek properties. As regards the Defence Intelligence building at Gerotek, the client is considering other options.”
