That was one message to emerge from defenceWeb’s inaugural Public Order Policing conference in early October 2011. Other themes to emerge strongly, at least for the South African Police Service, was an enthusiasm to address the issue in spite of a shortage of funds, training and personnel.

Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa told the conference these and other issues are being addressed in a policy review still underway (and announced in August). Judging by the presentations made, top people in key places are aware of the problems…
