Poynting Antennas started in 1990 as a small consultancy business at the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, offering RF design consulting and antenna placement studies.
The company grew rapidly. Currently, it designs, develops and manufactures its own custom antenna solutions that it sells worldwide. Poynting Antennas is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) AltX and has two main divisions: Commercial and Defence/Specialised (DS).
The Poynting Group has grown in size over the last few years, with its DS division outperforming most of the competitors. Over the last eight years, the Defence division had steady revenue growth and year-on-year profitability. The acquisition of Radiant Antennas in 2012 has made a positive impact on sales and the overall group revenue.
Poynting Antennas DS division specialises in the design, development and manufacture of antennas and related RF equipment. It focuses on military and specialised antennas for Direction Finding (DF), Monitoring, Jamming, Counter-RCIED and Communication Applications, Log Periodic Dipole Arrays (LPDA), Masts and supporting RF electronics.
DS’ mission is to deliver high quality antenna solutions on time through technical and service excellence. In order to achieve its vision to be the global antenna supplier/partner of choice for the defence, security and communications market, it employs highly skilled mechanical and electrical engineers with decades of antenna design experience between them. Some of its areas of expertise include DF, wideband and high-power antenna design.
One of Poynting’s key differentiators is its broad range of direction finding (DF) antennas. It first started developing DF antennas back in 2003 and officially released the DF-A0001, its first DF antenna, in 2004. The DF-A0001 is a tactical interferometer antenna and is still one of the company’s bestselling products to date. Poynting now has approximately 20 DF antennas that are fully developed and ready for market. Its competitive advantage comes from its ability to design antennas, and its in-house software that it has developed, allows a higher level of analysis than standard software. This enables DS to verify its DF antenna performance independent of the DF receiver used.
Poynting Antennas produces all of its DS products at its facility in Wynberg, South Africa, and is ISO 9001:2008 accredited. Quality is one of the most important drivers, and it has adopted the process of continuous improvement for each of its products.
In the short to medium term, Poynting Antennas plans to grow its DS division by focusing on the aforementioned areas. Its DF product portfolio is its strongest, and it will continue to grow by offering new solutions and products across its whole portfolio. The ITU (international telecommunication union) market is a particular growth target area for the company, for its DF and monitoring antenna offering. In order to increase its global presence, Poynting Antennas actively searches for partners around the world which contribute to its sales channel with their local market knowledge.
