A 22 Squadron Oryx helicopter and its crew were major contributors to a weekend Western Cape mountain rescue.
The rotary-wing aircraft based at AFB Ysterplaat was tasked for a search and rescue mission in the Cedarberg, 24 nautical miles from one of three SA Air Force (SAAF) bases in the province. The others are Langebaanweg and Overberg.
A climber who sustained head and other injuries in a fall had to be hospitalised.
According to the air force the helicopter departed base in 30 knot winds with Major Sproul (commander), Major Strauss (co-pilot) and Warrant Officer Class 2 Usher (flight engineer) and a doctor aboard. The Oryx touched down to allow the doctor to attend to the injured climber and took off, orbiting for 30 minutes while he worked the patient. The injured climber was safely brought back to Ysterplaat from where a Cape Town metro ambulance moved him to hospital.
Crew returned safe to their squadron ops room after a 2 hour 40 mission successfully executed.
