The Kenya Air Force (KAF) has officially received nine Fennec helicopters from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after the aircraft were spotted in Kenya earlier this month.
The Kenya Defence Force on 14 September said the Cabinet Secretary for Defence Ambassador Raychelle Omamo and Commander of the Kenya Air Force Major General Francis Ogolla received the helicopters at the Laikipia Air Base, Nanyuki.
Photos of at least four single-engine AS550 Fennecs (H125Ms) without their main rotor blades were published by The Kenyan Daily Post on 4 September with Kenyan roundels. The publication said the aircraft were acquired from the UAE and their grey paint scheme matches those of UAE aircraft.
It was earlier reported that eight aircraft were acquired, but the Kenya Defence Force has said nine were received from the UAE and will most likely be used in its efforts against al Shabaab militants.
The UAE’s Army Aviation Brigade and the Air Force’s Special Operations Command operate a number of AS550C3 Fennec helicopters but little is known about them.
