Zambian Air Force MFI-17 crashes

Two Zambia Air Force pilots died on Wednesday when their Saab MFI-17 trainer aircraft crashed outside Livingstone.

The aircraft came down around midday near Kabanje Bwiketo village around 40 km from Livingstone in Zambia’s Southern Province. Although the aircraft crashed near village huts, no-one on the ground was hurt.

Local witnesses said the aircraft rolled several times before impacting the ground. The pilots’ bodies were subsequently recovered by Zambia Air Force, police and fire brigade personnel.

The aircraft was from 4 Training Command’s Flying Training School, based at Livingstone/Harry Muanga Nkumula International Airport, according to Air Forces Daily. Zambia received 20 MFI-17s between 1975 and 1977 but it is not clear how many are still operational.
