Team 82 of the Silver Falcons is busy getting ready for the 2018 air show season and will perform its first display at Zwartkop next month.
Team 82 is currently being rebuilt, with some changes compared to Team 81. It is being led by Major Omphile Mutloane, with Major Beki Shabangu flying the number two position, Major Corne Van Deventer as number three and Major Sivu Tangana as Falcon 4.
The fifth member will only be joining the team from June onwards and is yet to be selected and trained up to form the five ship display the Silver Falcons are so well known for.
Once the fifth member has been selected the team positions will change. This will see the fifth team member joining the #2 (right wing) position, Shabangu moving to the #4 position (slot pilot) and Tangana moving to the back to #5 (soloist). Van Deventer will remain at the #3 position (left wing)
The Silver Falcons first full display will be on 5 May at the South African Air Force (SAAF) Museum air show at Air Force Base Zwartkop. Next will be the Lowveld Air Show in Nelspruit on 12 May. The rest of the calendar is yet to be confirmed by SAAF Headquarters.
Zwartkop will not be the first Silver Falcons display of 2018 – they performed for Armed Forces Day in February and a solo Falcon flew display at the Rand Show last weekend.
Apart from the pilots, the other members of the Silver Falcons are Ground Liaison Officer Major Musa Dlamini and the team Public Relations Officer Captain Wurm Albasini.
Team 81 comprised leader Mark Gentles, Bheki Shabangu as number two, Sivu Tangana as number three, Wendy Badenhorst as number four and Omphile Mutloane as number five with Corne van Deventer as Ground Liaison Officer.
