The South African Air Force has awarded Reutech Solutions (Pty) Ltd, trading as RDL (Reutech Defence Logistics), a R3.8 million contract for support services related to the service’s Tactical Mobile Radar (TMR) and a monopulse secondary surveillance radar systems.

The contract is an extension of R26.6 million in work awarded in September 2009. The TMR is assigned to 142 Squadron, part of the Air Force Mobile Deployment Wing and is based on the Marconi S711. It is a medium range radar system that can range 64 nautical miles at 15 revolutions per minute and a 100 nautical miles at 7.5 revolutions per minute. When deployed in a tactical role, the radar system and its operators are equipped to sustain themselves, without resupply, for up to 20 days.

Janes C4I Systems report the S711 is a short- to medium-range radar for low-level and gap-filling roles. It operates in E/F-band and uses a high-performance 5m aperture double curvature, cosecant squared, carbon fibre reflector, horn-fed antenna. This antenna can be hydraulically elevated up to 20m for visibility over local obstructions.
