Operation Ligcolo (Swazi for tree bark) is the name of the current national defence force humanitarian and law enforcement deployment with the SA Air Force (SAAF) a contributor of note in the northernmost reaches of the country.
A SAAF detachment in Musina is providing a reconnaissance and surveillance capability to 9 SA Infantry Battalion. This, according to the SA National Defence Force (SANDF), comprises rotary wing support, an air operations team as well as protection and ground support services.
A single-engine C-208 Caravan fitted with the Koiler electro-optical surveillance system provides battlefield support, a SANDF statement said. This allows co-pilot Lieutenant Lesego Mabena and the flight crew to gain insight, knowledge and expertise on tactical operational training while renewing competencies and currencies.
There are 2 122 national defence force personnel from services including the SAAF, SA Army and SA Military Health Service (SAMHS) currently deployed on Ligcolo which is scheduled to finish at month-end.
