SAA assisting new union in recognition process

2018

South African Airways (SAA) today started verifying membership forms of National Transport Movement (NTM) members.

This follows at least two protests by members of the newest addition to the ranks of transport trade unions.

The protests took place outside the national carrier’s headquarters earlier this year and caused no disruption to operations. At the time of the protests SAA did not recognise the union because it had insufficient members. Since then an agreement on terms of reference and verification has been signed to assist the union in gaining recognition.

The verification process is being facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). A report on the process will be finalised by mid-February.
“This development is a welcome move and a step in the right direction despite the fact that NTM regrettably advised they will not cease or suspend the strike during the verification process. However, they have agreed to call off the strike when the CCMA delivers its report regardless of the outcome,” SAA spokesman Tlali Tlali said.
