Now this is an airshow!

Regular defenceWeb contributor Jacques de Vries took time out from his studies in Austria to attend the weekend’s Red Bull Airpower 2013 extravaganza at the Hinterstoisser Air Base.

He reports that more than 300 000 people attended over two days with Friday “an absolute knockout”.
“International display teams, old-timer aircraft, stunt pilots and visiting air forces were just the start.
“A pair of Eurofighter Typhoons had an epic dogfight duel directly above the base and absolutely tore up the sky with plenty of ‘vlamgat’ turn and burn. It was slightly overcast, but the backdrop of green pine clad hills and blue/slate grey sky made for excellent viewing,” said the man who is furthering his military studies in the area of civil/military co-operation in the European country.

The eagle-eyed South African also picked up the registration of the Packard/Rolls Royce Merlin engined Spitfire Mk XVIe during a flypast as a special memory of the airshow.
“B(RAF roundel)K to me could only be interpreted as reading BOK – a flying Springbok if ever I did see one.”
