New gallery: Zwartkop helicopter day

1950

The oldest air force base – Zwartkop – in South Africa hosted the annual helicopter day on Saturday. It was an occasion for serving and retired members of the rotary-wing fraternity to get together and discuss their time in the SA Air Force (SAAF) flying Super Frelons, Pumas and Alouette IIs and IIIs, all of which have since been retired from service.

Making the gathering at the SA Air Force Association’s Hartbees pub more memorable was the presence of, among others, former SAAF Chief Lieutenant General Dennis Earp, Major General “Hug” Paine and retired Brigadier General John Church.

They were treated to a flypast by a Puma and both of the Alouette types.

A large contingent of retired air mechanics, armourers and others who kept helicopters in the air and working properly during the Bush War were also present.
