French soldier dies in EC725 helicopter crash in Burkina Faso

A special forces soldier died on Saturday when the French Army Air Corps EC725AP Caracal helicopter he was flying in crashed in Burkina Faso.

According to the French defence ministry, the aircraft was on a night training flight when it came down, killing master sergeant Samir Baija and seriously injuring two others, who were flown to a French military medical facility in N’Djamena, Chad.

The helicopter was deployed to Burkina Faso as part of France’s Operation Barkhane aimed at combating terrorist organisations in the Sahara-Sahel region. Officials said that while the exact cause of the crash is not yet known, the aircraft was not lost to combat action.
