The Egyptian Air Force (EAF) has selected Lockheed Martin’s Sniper targeting pod to equip its 20 F-16 fighters purchased under the Peace Vector programme, becoming the 13 international customer for the pod.
The Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod (ATP) provides targeting and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities in a single system that provides automatic tracking. It features a laser designator, Forward Looking InfraRed imager and CCD camera as well as a video datalink.
“The Egyptian Air Force is a well-established customer of Lockheed Martin targeting systems, having flown LANTIRN targeting pods since the early 1990s,” said Hugh Woods, international program manager in Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control business. “We are eager to ensure that EAF pilots have access to advanced targeting and NTISR capabilities by outfitting Peace Vector aircraft with Sniper.”
The pods will be used on Egypt’s 16 F-16C and four F-16D Advanced Block 50/52 Fighting Falcons that were ordered early least year. Egypt was the first Arab country to purchaseF-16s through a Foreign Military Sales program called Peace Vector. The Egyptian Air Force received a total of 42 F-16s in its first order in 1980 and since then has purchased five more lots of aircraft, for a total of 240 F-16 Fighting Falcons. The last of the 20 F-16s will be delivered in 2013.
Egypt has ordered other pods for its F-16s – in July last year it selected the Raytheon Advanced Countermeasures Electronic System (ACES) for its new fighters as part of the US$3.2 billion deal. The ACES integrated electronic warfare suite comprises a radar warning receiver, jammer and chaff-flare dispenser.
In November last year Goodrich Corporation received a contract for its DB-110 airborne reconnaissance system for Egypt’s new F-16s. Goodrich’s DB-110 digital, real-time, tactical reconnaissance system captures images day and night using electro-optical/infrared sensor technology. Images can then be transmitted in real-time to analysts on the ground. Egypt is the eighth country to select Goodrich’s DB-110 system.
