Deputy Zambian Air Force Chief killed in MFI-15 crash


Major General Muliokela Muliokela, deputy commander of the Zambian Air Force (ZAF) was killed yesterday when the Saab MFI-15 light aircraft he was flying in crashed.

His co-pilot, Colonel Brian Mweene, was also killed in the crash yesterday afternoon during a routine training exercise.
“It is with deep sorrow and grief that we announce the a Zambia Air Force (ZAF) SAAB MFI-15 plane crashed in Lusaka west killing two crew members,” said defence minister Edgar Lungu.

An investigation into the crash has been launched.

The aircraft was from 4 Training Command’s Flying Training School at Livingstone/Harry Muanga Nkumula International Airport. Zambia received 20 MFI-15s between 1975 and 1977 but it is not clear how many are still operational.

This is the second Zambian MFI-15 crash this year – on January 15 two Zambian Air Force pilots died in a crash outside Livingstone.
