CASSIDIAN and ENERTRAG co-operate on beacons for wind turbines

Cassidian, the defence and security division of the EADS aerospace group, will be working together with ENERTRAG, a wind power company, on beacons for wind turbines. The companies have signed a declaration of intent whereby a radar from Cassidian will be integrated into ENERTRAG’s system of beacons. This system warns pilots about possible collisions with wind turbines, by locating aircraft or helicopters flying towards a turbine at an early stage, and only triggering signals such as LED lamps when they are needed. Disturbances to residents are thus reduced to a minimum.

In the coming year, ENERTRAG and Cassidian are planning to equip a pilot project with the new system so as to meet the requirements for official certification of a joint product.

The system will be available to all customers in the wind turbine market.

Cassidian leads the market for radar systems in Germany, and supplies radar equipment to military and security forces worldwide.

The company is active around the world in the market for civil air traffic control systems.

ENERTRAG’s systems engineering division (ENERTRAG Systemtechnik) supplies marking components to manufacturers and operators of wind turbines.

This division is particularly active in the development of solutions which increase the acceptance of wind power.

ENERTRAG generates electricity from wind and other renewable sources. This group of companies employs about 430 staff in locations in several European countries. ENERTRAG plans, installs and operates power plants. It develops technologies and financial products and has an extensive service network for wind turbines in Germany. ENERTRAG’s annual turnover is about 250 million euros.
