Saab in the Sub-Sahara Africa region consolidates Saab’s position as a leading defence and civil security company in the African countries on which it operates. Saab in Africa has capabilities ranging from electronic warfare, sensor technology, command and control systems, training systems, radio communication, aviation and support solutions.

Saab’s almost 1100 employees in South Africa form an integral part of our company at all levels, from the most highly qualified research and development engineers to technical and support staff. They explore technologies and bring them to maturity, manufacture high quality products for civil security and defence use in Africa and around the world, and contribute significantly to Saab’s overall bottom line.

Saab Systems Grintek has combined into one focussed business unit the tradition of excellence in decision support systems, C4ISR, tactical communications, and training simulation systems for civil and military uses developed over decades by Saab Grintek Communications.

The business unit is also active in the areas of civil security, communications, navigation, and surveillance systems solutions, integrating “best of breed” equipment from a range of international manufacturers. Besides tailoring and integrating crisis management and first responder command and control systems for police and fire and rescue services, the business unit also equips air traffic control authorities and weather forecasters in support of air traffic safety.

Electronic Defence Systems business area is fully integrated with the Swedish business unit of the same name, with the African element continuing as the primary driver of development and innovation in the following key areas:
 o self protection systems for airborne, naval, and land platforms
 o naval electronic support measures systems
 o digital recording systems
 o airborne health and usage monitoring systems (hums

Support and Service supplies customised advanced electronic systems and life-cycle support for defence and civil security users on land, at sea, and in the air, as well as in commercial aviation. The business unit also produces field facilities such as fully equipped and rapidly deployable mobile hospitals, dental clinics, and accommodation for deployed United Nations peacekeepers.


Aeronautics business area in South Africa focuses on coordinating and communicating four different areas: the marketing and sales of all Aeronautics products and services, programme components and support for Gripen.
