With the BRICS Summit in South Africa and its associated defence industry seminar still fresh in the memory, local defence industry giant Denel is striking while the iron is still hot.

• TH1n, the world’s smallest terminal provided by Cassidian, beat four other high-quality products nominated in the ‘Best TETRA Enterprise Product’ category.
• The International TETRA Awards recognise excellence in the field of TETRA radio communications and have awarded Cassidian a prize for its product.
• Cassidian is a global leader in secure radio communication networks, with more than 230 networks deployed in 70 countries and a base of more than one million terminals sold.

London, 26 March 2013 – Cassidian’s small TH1n terminal has won the International TETRA Awards for ‘Best TETRA Enterprise Product’. The ceremony took place at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden on 21 March.

In this category, the judges were looking for products that best utilise the capabilities that TETRA has to offer. All of the products nominated had to offer a wide range of features and be easy to use, including within a broad spectrum of critical communications scenarios. Five products from different companies were shortlisted in this category.

“Our TH1n terminal is the first in a completely new class of pocket-sized TETRA radios. It has generated lots of customer interest from the Public Safety sector and in the industry all over the world and has already been delivered to a number of customers since we launched it last year in Dubai,” highlighted Pierre Lopez, Head of Terminals & Indirect Channels Business Management at Cassidian. “It was used for the first time by security staff during the Munich Security Conference in February. It is the smallest and lightest TETRA radio device in the world, which makes the TH1n particularly suited to covert use.”

The completely new form allows the TH1n to be carried in new ways. Small enough to be slipped into a pocket clip holder, a shoulder holster or a carry case with a neck strap, it can also be carried in belt and lapel-mounted holsters. This makes it ideal for many different users, including those who have found it difficult to find a radio of the right size and weight to fit their needs, those who wear business clothing or light uniforms rather than weatherproof gear, and those who need to be discrete in their operational missions.

The annual International TETRA Awards – a collaboration between TETRA Today magazine and the TETRA + Critical Communications Association (TCCA) – were established to celebrate the achievements of TETRA manufacturers and users. Split into seven different categories, the awards have been designed to recognise excellence in the field of TETRA radio communications. The judges, who are located all over the globe, cast their votes and the TETRA Awards unveiled a shortlist of entries last December.

While not officially on the BRICS Summit agenda, the South African defence sector grasped the bull by the horns by arranging a specialist seminar and exhibition on the side of the main event in Durban this week.

With two concrete collaborations already in place with BRICS member states, Denel will use next week’s Durban Summit to build more defence industry partnerships.
