Lack of equipment, resources hampering police in fight against crime: DA

The police lack the equipment and resources they need to fight against crime, the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) says.   Party spokeswoman on policing, Dianne Kohler-Barnard, this morning released the results of a survey the DA conducted at a sample number of stations countrywide.   The study concludes that too many police officers are risking their lives to do their job.

France shows SA new crowd control techniques

The French Gendarmerie National and Police National, that country’s two law enforcement agencies, have just completed a four-week train-the-trainer programme with their South African counterparts that have schooled the latter in the use of newly acquired crowd control equipment.   National police spokesman Captain Dennis Adriao says 120 SA Police Service instructors underwent a one month train-the-trainer programme in the effective management of unruly crowds.

Unemployment climbs

South Africa's official unemployment rate edged up to 23.2% in the period July-September from 23.1% in the three months before that, a government labour report shows.   Statistics SA’s latest Labour Force Survey that provides estimates of employment in both the formal and informal sectors finds that the total number of unemployed people is marginally higher at 4.122-million. Total employment fell slightly to 13,655-million people.

Feature: Towards an Integrated Criminal Justice System

By all reports criminals have taken to abusing information and communications technology (ICT) in a big way, but the same does not appear to be true of law enforcement – at least not in SA.   The country’s police stations and courts are still largely bereft of ICT and a great deal of spin is generated around even small accomplishments, such as close circuit television (CCTV) cameras in a few courts to allow abused children to testify out of sight of their molesters.
