Military bases host youth camps

Youth camps underway at SANDF basesAnother SA National Defence Force (SANDF) contribution to nation building is currently underway with around a thousand young men and women at youth camps hosted by military bases in three provinces,

The camps are a Department of Social Development initiative and are now in their sixth year of operation.

According to SAnews “dialogues conducted during the camps enable youth to discuss solutions to societal ills, including unemployment, HIV infection rates, sustainable development, the rights of people with disabilities and gender-based violence (GBV)”.

The South African military also serves as the disciplinary authority for the camps which sees attendees temporarily housed at military bases in Kimberley (Northern Cape), Potchefstroom (North West) and Bloemfontein (Free State). The camps last four weeks with discipline an integral component.

During the camps those attending are also given insight into the skills needed for personal development, including business and basic communication.

In the 2017/18 financial year 857 young people reported at 3 SA Infantry Battalion in Kimberley with a further 200 doing training at the Army Support Base in Bloemfontein and another 171 doing training at 4 Artillery Regiment in Potchefstroom.
