Veterans’ militaria fair at Warrior Shellhole

SA War Graves Society militaria fairThe SA War Graves Society (SAWGS) will this Sunday stage another in its series of veterans’ militaria fairs to raise much-needed funds for restoration and maintenance of war graves and memorials.

The MOTH Warrior Shellhole in Muldersdrift, west of Johannesburg, will open its gates to all who have an interest in South Africa’s military history and its preservation on Sunday, September 30.

Klaus Weber, SAWGS chairman, said stalls offering, memorabilia, books, antiques and CDs would be operational all day with models and displays of vintage military vehicles and equipment adding extra value.

He is sure it will be a memorable day with food stalls and a cash bar as well as the opportunity to indulge in a braai later in the afternoon.

Among projects the SAWGS is currently working on are completion and maintenance of the Boer War Jameson Raid British volunteer grave in Randfontein, the Johanna van der Merwe Voortrekker Monument in Linden, Johannesburg and another five projects including concentration camps in the Johannesburg area as well as the Klerksdorp cemetery.

SAWGS aims to preserve, restore and maintain war graves, concentration camp sites and historic monuments which are often targets of grave robbers, vandals and not maintained by local authorities.
