Turkey flies indigenous T625 helicopter

A T625 helicopter.Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has carried out the first flight of its T625 multirole helicopter, the company’s most ambitious project to date.

The T625 performed its first flight on 6 September at its facilities in Ankara, Turkey. The first prototype of new generation, 6 tone, light intermediate, T625 Helicopter which is completely designed and developed by Turkish Aerospace, completed its maiden flight after several ground tests.

During its 20 minutes flight, the aircraft performed as expected with an assessment of the helicopter’s general handling, transmission and rotor systems, TAI said.

T625 is a new generation, twin engine, 12 seat + 2 crew helicopter specifically designed for military, paramilitary and civilian purposes and geared for hot and high performance.

“T625 Multirole Helicopter is planning to meet a range of new export opportunities and requirements in the worldwide market as a game changer and new player, by exceeding the multi-mission requirements for adverse weather conditions with its MTOW/Cabin Size ratio, highest levels of safety and operational benefits for operators with EASA certification,” TAI said.

The T625 programme was launched in 2013. Production is expected after 2021.

The helicopter has a five-bladed main rotor and a four-bladed tail rotor to minimize vibration and noise. Both main and tail rotor hubs are fully-articulated with elastomeric bearings. Both rotor systems are driven by a transmission system which consists of a three-stage main gear box having the capability of operating for 30 minutes in the event of loss of lubrication.

The T625 Multirole Helicopter has ASELSAN avionics with a glass cockpit having two wide touchscreen (8x20 inches) Integrated Mission Displays and two touch screen (8x10 inches) data entry Touch Command Control Units. A 4-axis dual redundant automatic flight control system is developed to provide superior performance and handling quality.

T625 is powered by two LHTEC (a Rolls Royce & Honeywell Partnership) CTS800 turboshaft engines, developing 1 373 shp each. The aircraft is designed for IFR and VFR single pilot operations, night operations and flight in known icing conditions.

Civil certification process of the Helicopter is ongoing with Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation which is planned to be followed by EASA (European Aviation Safety Authority) certification.
