Kruger ranger killed in encounter with poachers

Kruger ranger killedThe war on poaching has claimed another life with a Kruger National Park ranger killed this week during an encounter with suspected poachers in the world renowned game reserve.

Reports from Kruger have it that the field ranger, whose name has not been made public, and colleagues made contact with a poaching group they were tracking, supported by the K9 unit. It appears shots were exchanged as they approached the suspected poachers. The ranger was wounded in the upper body. A doctor was flown in to stabilise him but he succumbed to his injuries en route to hospital.

Reacting SANParks chief executive Fundisile Mketeni expressed sympathy to the ranger’s family, colleagues and associates. He said: “We express our sincerest condolences to his immediate family, colleagues and associates. Our prayers are with them during this difficult period, it is never easy to cope with losing a loved one, especially in this manner. We have lost a patriot who died on duty protecting South African assets and who was well trained to defend himself, hence our shock on learning of the incident. We will draw strength from his contribution to the anti-poaching campaign and as colleagues we are going to continue where he left off in honour of his memory”.
