New Silver Falcon joins the team

Silver Falcons. The Silver Falcons aerobatic display team has a new member. Major Tiaan Stander has joined the team in the number two position.

Stander’s addition to Team 82 was announced earlier this week. He joins team leader Major Omphile Mutloane (Falcon 1), Major Bekhi Shabangu (Falcon 4), Major Corne van Deventer (Falcon 3), and Major Sivu Tangana (Falcon 5). Ground Liaison Officer is Major Musa Dlamini and Public Relations Officer is Captain Xander Albasani.

Stander joined the South Africa Air Force in 2002 and received his wings in 2008. He served as A109 and Oryx commanders before doing his instructor’s course in 2016. He has over 800 hours on the PC-7 Mk II, as well as 50 hours on the Alouette III, 380 hours on the A109 and 1 500 hours on the Oryx, according to Aviation Central

Named the Silver Falcons on 22 November 1967, the team initially flew Impala Mk I jet trainers before switching to five PC-7 Mk II turboprops in 1998. They are based at Air Force Base Langebaanweg, which is the SAAF’s main training base. Unlike most teams, the Silver Falcons is a part-time team as pilots and ground crew all have regular duties in addition to display flying.

The Silver Falcons will be performing at the Bethlehem Air Show on 25 August and during Africa Aerospace and Defence between 21 and 23 September. Their last performance was at the Mthatha Air Show in June, which was preceded by the air show in Newcastle.
