SANDF celebrating youth day

Youth Day celebrations. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is today, 22 June, celebrating Youth Day, with multiple activities taking place in Pretoria at the Military Sport Club in Thaba Tshwane.

The Department of Defence (DoD) said that in acknowledgement of the 42nd anniversary of Youth Day, it has aligned itself with government imperatives, policies and programmes on Youth matters and is hosting Youth Day celebrations as part of Youth Month.

“Entrenching our Democracy in salute for our heroes and our recognition of Nelson Mandela’s centenary, this year the South African National Defence Force will mark centenary of the life of our nation’s founding father Nelson Mandela under the them, “Be the Legacy” by celebrating youth cohesion, endurance, productivity and soldiering through march & drill and different sport codes,” the SANDF said.

The programme for the day was due to start with an opening parade and be followed by aerobics, cycling, dance, golf, jukskei, running, rugby, soccer and the drill competition by the 2018 Military Skills Development January intake from all services. The SANDF said the competitions allow the department of defence to measure the amount of work each service has put into their newly recruited troops. The SA Army and Military Health Service came first in the MSDS drill, with the SA Navy in second place followed by the Air Force.

Youth Day on 16 June commemorates the Soweto uprising of 1976.
