Farm murders to have Parliamentary airing

Farm murdersFarm attacks and murders will be debated in Parliament. This assurance was given to Freedom Front Plus (FF+) leader Pieter Groenewald by Police Minister Bheki Cele.

It comes on the heels on the SA Police Service (SAPS) releasing statistics on farm attacks and murders earlier this month – what the FF+ has long been asking for.

“Without reliable information and statistics, it’s impossible to plan to minimise and even prevent further attacks,” Groenewald said adding no date has yet been set for the debate.

“Minister Cele indicated he is willing to discuss the issue with the FF+ in an attempt to find solutions to what is a growing problem,” Groenewald said.

Statistics given to the FF+ show over the six years since 2012, there were 3 059 attacks in total, on average 509.8 a year, in which 338 people were killed averaging 56.3 a year.

The province recording the highest number of attacks over this timeframe was North West with 772 followed by Gauteng with 644. The highest number of murders in this time was in Gauteng (69), followed by KwaZulu-Natal and North West, with 61 each.

Speaking after Minister Cele delivered his budget vote, Groenewald said government “has finally done what the FF+ has implored it to do for close on two decades and appoint a competent national police commissioner”.

“The Minister does indeed have the necessary police experience having served as national police commissioner for a few years.”
