Armscor seeking 107 mm ammunition

A Type 63 multiple rocket launcher.Armscor is looking to acquire 1 200 rounds of 107 mm ammunition, after issuing a tender for six 107 mm multiple rocket launchers in 2017.

In a tender issued on 5 December 2017, Armscor said it was looking for 1 200 rounds of high explosive (HE) 107 mm rocket ammunition for the 2017/18 financial year as well as another batch of 30. The rounds are to have maximum range of 8.5 km. They are “to comply and fit perfectly into 107 mm launcher Type 63.”

The tender document noted that “a request has been given to this office regarding inputs for a RFO to procure 107 mm rockets at an overseas manufacturer. The SANDF still have 107 mm rockets in stock.”

The tender closes on 29 January 2018. It comes after Armscor on 14 August 2017 issued a tender for the acquisition of six Type 63 107 mm multiple rocket launchers (MRLs). The tender closed on 5 September.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) uses the system as a number of launchers were captured in Angola during the Bush War and rockets manufactured locally by Mechem, Rheinmetall Denel Munition, Aserma and Fuchs. Mechem Developments some years ago also manufactured a copy of the launcher as the RO 107.

The Type 63 is a towed, 12 tube launcher produced by China from the 1960s – it is still in service with China’s military as well as a large number of export customers. It can fire high explosive, high explosive incendiary and high explosive fragmentation rockets out to a range of 8 500 metres.
