Saab awarded SAAF Gripen support contract

SAAF Gripens.Saab has received a contract to support the South African Air Force’s (SAAF’s) fleet of 26 Gripens between November 2017 and February 2020. The contract is worth R314 million and covers airworthiness management, maintenance, repair and overhaul.

Saab last week said it had signed the contract with Armscor, covering support related services like airworthiness management, engineering support, maintenance, repair and overhaul, spares replenishment and updates of technical publications.

“Signing this contract further reinforces the good relationship between Saab, Armscor and the South African Air Force. This order is vital to support the effective operation and availability of Gripen C and D in South Africa over the coming years,” said Ellen Molin, Head of business area Support and Services within Saab.

The South African Air Force has been operating the Gripen fighter since 2008 when the first Gripen was delivered. It has been awarding Saab support contracts for many years – the most recent was for the 2013-2016 period, worth R295 million (SEK180 million). It was awarded at the end of 2013 – for much of that year the SAAF had no Gripen support contracts with the SAAF doing hands on maintenance work.

By August 2011, the SAAF had spent R151 million on Gripen support, including R45 million to Saab for the period November 2010 to March 2012. Other SAAF Gripen maintenance contracts have been awarded to Volvo Aero Corporation, Saab Grintek Defence, Denel, Martin Baker, Tetech Projects, Quad Precision Engineering and the CSIR.
