MENA country has acquired Iskander-E ballistic missiles

An Iskander-M missile launcher.A country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, believed to be Algeria, has acquired Iskander-E ballistic missiles from Russia.

This is according to an official from Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, who was speaking to RIA Novosti during the Dubai Airshow last week.

The official confirmed that the system has been exported to a country in the region but refused to disclose to which one it was. Russia and Armenia operate Iskander-M, which in export configuration is designated Iskander-E.

According to the missile’s manufacturer KBM, the Iskander has a maximum range of 280 km and a 480 kg payload. It is available with fragmentation, blast fragmentation, and penetration warheads. Each launch vehicle carries two missiles.

According to the September edition of DSI magazine, Algeria has acquired four Iskander-E systems. The magazine notes the missiles give Algeria an unrivalled strike capability in the region.
