$5 billion worth of contracts signed at IDEX 2017

IDEX.A total of $5 billion worth of contracts have been signed at the IDEX defence show held in Abu Dhabi between 19 and 23 February.

More than 1 200 companies took part in the region's largest defence show. Here are some of the highlights:

UAE and Russia plan to develop a 5th generation joint light fighter. According to Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rostec, an initial agreement has been signed and work on the project should start next year. A similar deal was signed between Russia and India last year.

The UAE Air Force and Saab signed a $235mn deal for a new G6000 Swing Role Surveillance System (SRSS) aircraft.

Recently, Nigeria announced that it will receive three A-29 Super Tucano, but Embraer CEO Jackson Schneider told Jane’s at IDEX that this declaration was premature.

Germany’s Stemme AG announced at the beginning of IDEX that they will partner with South Africa’s S-Plane Automation to integrate S-Plane subsystems into the Ecarys ES15 aircraft to create an optionally Piloted Vehicle (OPV).

During NAVDEX, China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Corporation (CSOC) presented for the first time its S-26 conventional submarine with air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, marketed for foreign customers.

During NAVDEX, Al Fattan displayed its new 6 m Combat Boat. The design of the boat is quite similar to the CB90 in service with the Swedish Navy. Al Fattan will also deliver 27 more fast interceptor boats to the UAE Coast Guard.

During IDEX-NAVDEX 2017, the UAE Navy commissioned its sixth and last Baynunah-class corvette, the Al Hili, built by Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding thanks to a transfer of technologies done by the French shipyard, Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie (CMN).

Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding delivered to the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Agency (CICPA) a new OPV built by Damen in its Romanian shipyard and completed by the emirati shipyard in Abu Dhabi. The 67 meter long vessel is armed with a BAE Bofors 57mm and has a large helicopter deck.

The UAE Presidential Guard is in the early stages of looking for a new 4x4 vehicle, and General Dynamics' OTS division is bidding with its Flyer 72 vehicle, according to the company. SC Group was displaying their new Jackal 2 variant, the HMT 400 Desert, which they are using for the future bid. NIMR's new Rapid Intervention Vehicle also launched at the show is the UAE's own developmental offering, and Polaris Defense & Government also confirmed their bid with the DAGOR.

Nimr armored vehicles will be marketed, distributed, produced and supported by VOP CZ in the Visegrád countries under a strategic collaboration agreement announced by Nimr. The agreement covers Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, with the vehicles also to be winterized for the market to maximize their performance in cold European weather conditions.

Harris has won an $189mn contract to provide an integrated battle management system to the United Arab Emirates armed forces, the company announced.

NIMR Automotive's N35 (6x6) mine-protected multipurpose vehicle and its 4x4 counterpart have been re-designated as the JAIS, with the 6x6 variant offered with increased firepower. At IDEX 2017 the JAIS 6x6 was shown fitted with the EVPU Turra 30 remote-controlled turret (RCT). NIMR will build 1 500 Jais armoured vehicles for the UAE military.

Turkish company Otokar won a deal worth $661mn to build Arma 8x8 amphibious armored infantry vehicles for the UAE land forces. Otokar signed an agreement establishing a joint venture to build the vehicles with Tawazun Holding.

Russia has secured a large order for UralVagonZavod T-90MS tanks from an undisclosed Middle Eastern country.

According to Sputnik news agency, the UAE Armed Forces have signed a $700mn Anti-Tank Missile Contract With Russia.

EDIC announced the launch of a new subsidiary company, Barij Munitions. According to a company release, the new firm will be involved in the manufacturing of "all types of ammunition," ranging from small-arms and infantry ammunition to artillery.

Local Company Isotrex Manufacturing unveiled a new all terrain mine resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle named Legion, at IDEX.

The Dubai-based company Minerva Special Purpose Vehicles (MSPV) confirmed during IDEX 2017 that it is building large numbers of Panthera T6 light armored vehicles for Egypt.
