Namibian anti-poaching unit receives Super Cub

A Piper Super Cub.The Namibian Intelligence Support Against Poaching (ISAP) anti-poaching group has taken delivery of a Piper P-18 Super Cub light utility aircraft that will be used to enhance aerial surveillance operations against rhino poaching in the country’s game reserves.

The two-seater aircraft was donated by Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL), a subsidiary of Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group, which has previously funded several rhino conservation projects.

The aircraft, named "The Protector", was handed over to the ISAP in a ceremony last week that was also attended by Namibian Environment and Tourism minister Pohamba Shifeta among other top government and parks authority officials.

NBL Managing Director Wessie van der Westhuizen said the company decided to support ISAP because the rhino poaching crisis was no longer just the responsibility of Namibian or Southern African Development Community (SADC) region alone.

"It is at the centre of world attention. We need to understand that not only does losing one single rhino cause an ecological imbalance, but the impact it has on our economy, in particular the tourism industry, is enormous.

"We cannot ignore this inhumane act and watch our beautiful endangered species become extinct. We need to act now. The plane we handed over today is testimony to our passionate commitment to really making rhino poaching a thing of the past,” he said.

The aircraft can land and take-off in unpaved runways and rugged terrain, which makes it suitable for anti-poaching and military surveillance operations.

The aircraft was completely refurbished by Westair Maintenance before being handed over. Refurbishment work began in September last year and first flight was on 10 February this year.

According to Namibia’s environment ministry, 216 black and white rhinos have been killed over the last four years while 266 elephants have been poached since 2013.
