Mobilised in 1914, the unit served with the Northern Force in German South West Africa. The regiment mobilised two battalions for World War Two and served with 7 SA Brigade in Madagascar in June 1943. For a brief period, in 1944, the unit was part of the British 24th Guards Brigade, then attached to the South African division.
