Established in 1913 and known as the 12th Infantry, Active Citizen Force, until 1928, when its full title became the Princess Alice’s Own Pretoria Regiment. It was formed from the Northern Mounted Rifles, the Pretoria Company of the Transvaal Scottish and the Pretoria detachment of the Transvaal Cycle and Motor Corps.

Mobilised in 1914, the unit served with the Northern Force in German South West Africa.
